5 Activities to Try in Austin to Destress

With the midterm season well upon us at this point, it’s not a surprise that most UT students are experiencing unmatched levels of stress. I’m sure that a majority of our schedules are currently filled to the brim with late-night coffee runs, overnight stays at the PCL, and a startling lack of sleep. While academics are important, your mental and physical wellbeing are too! And with the hustle and bustle of college life, it’s easy to forget that we live in one of our nation’s most vibrant and lively cities. In today’s post, we’ll highlight five relaxing activities that you can partake in during your next study break to de-stress.

1. Spend some time in nature.

Austin is one of America’s greenest cities and is home to a number of trails, outdoor parks, and more. Check out the 360 Overlook or Barton Creek Greenbelt and break a sweat while spending some time in the good ol’ outdoors.

2. Enjoy a picnic at Zilker Park.

Zilker is the perfect place for a socially distanced outdoor hangout. Grab some takeout from your favorite restaurant and a picnic blanket and head to Zilker for a relaxing catch-up with friends. Use this as an opportunity to unplug from the digital world and enjoy some downtime! This activity is especially perfect for dog lovers - you’re sure to see a ton of furry friends while at Zilker. You can even bring along a frisbee disc or soccer ball to get some exercise in while you’re there!

3. Grab a sweet treat.

Nothing is better for the soul than dessert (at least, not in my opinion). With Austin being one of the most exciting food cities in the country, you’re sure to find your sugary treat of choice. For options close to campus, grab an ice cream sandwich from Cold Cookie Company, a delicious pastry from Lucky Lab Coffee, or a late night cookie from Insomnia Cookies. If you’re feeling like a drive, check out Gourdough’s donut food truck or Baked Bear.

4. Take part in some retail therapy.

Shopping (or window shopping) is a great way to get your mind off an overwhelming exam or assignment and focus on something a lot more fun. For options close to campus, check out Tyler’s, Miss Behavin, C Jane, or the CoOp (you can never own too much burnt orange!). The Domain, Barton Creek Square, and South Congress have great options further from campus. If you’re feeling like a thrifting adventure, Buffalo Exchange is a great thrift store just a short walk down Guad!

5. Practice mindfulness.

Anxiety and stress are unfortunately common, but meditation and mindfulness are great coping techniques. You can check out YTX Austin for a great yoga class. For an at home solution, download the Headspace app for excellent guided meditations or try one of “Yoga with Adrienne’s” videos on YouTube!

We all have our preferred way to unplug and kick back, whether it be one of the activities listed above or something else entirely. Whatever your preference, Launch Exec wants to remind you to take time for yourself! Especially during stressful weeks filled with deadlines and due dates, it can be easy to neglect your personal needs in place of academic obligations. Schedule time during every day to relax in whatever shape or form you prefer (even if it’s just a 20 minute TikTok break). Best of luck on all of your midterms, and as always, hook ‘em!
